APEC 2020

Malaysia was the host for APEC 2020, a year guided by the theme “Optimising Human Potential Towards a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity: Pivot. Prioritise. Progress” and the following three priorities:;

Improve the Narrative of Trade and Investment

This priority sought to work on the APEC Post-2020 Vision, from a different perspective and not only centred on the traditional conception of growth, along with exploring complementary indicators for GDP for the measurement of development and inclusive and responsible business and investment perspectives.

Inclusive economic participation through Digital Economy and Technology

The priority aimed to promote more inclusive economic participation, including the empowerment of women, the improvement of conditions for the elderly, and more opportunities and facilities for SMEs.. In addition, it sought to advance topics like the internet, the digital economy, the future of work and new digital capacities. This priority is closely aligned with the priorities of APEC Chile 2019, specially “Women, SMEs, Inclusive Growth” and “Digital Society”.

Driving Innovative Sustainability

This priority intended to advance the work on circular economy, food security as well as cleaner and more sustainable energies. This priority is linked to Chile’s priority “Sustainable Growth” in 2019, which, together with the Roadmaps of Chiles, has set a precedent and a firm basis for initiatives that promote sustainable growth and development..

Objectives for Chile in 2020

Give continuity to the work of 2019

Driving and developing the legacy of our APEC year, especially the development and implementation of the three Roadmaps endorsed in 2019 and the call to focus efforts on common objectives, openness to close and collaborative dialogues, with a view to reaching consensus. In 2020, the implementation plans for the three Chilean Roadmaps on Women and Inclusive Growth, on IUU Fishing and on Marine Debris were developed and endorsed. Other Chilean deliverables from 2019, like the Single Window Interoperability Action Plan, the Blueprint 2.0. to advance Global Value Chains and the Final Push in Services also made progress.

Active participation in the elaboration of the Post-2020 Vision of APEC (APEC Putrajaya Vision 2014)

which replaces the Bogor Goals of 1994 and leads the work of the Forum in the next 20 years.

Leadership of Chile as Chair

In 2020, Chile chaired several Committees or groups: The Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI), the Budget and Management Committee (BMC), the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE) and the Digital Economy Steering Group (DESG). While its chairmanship for the BMC, PPWE and DESG comes to an end in December 2020, its presidency in the CTI continues. In 2019 Chile was elected for the first time and unanimously to preside the CTI for the 2020-2021 period.

The nomination was a clear recognition for the work performed by Chile during its host year and gives our country the opportunity to lead the work agenda of the most important Committee of the Forum.
